The 993 is generally a very reliable vehicle – one of the most reliable from the Porsche stable. Braunton Engineering see Porsche 993s for age and wear related issues or for routine maintenance. MO33 suspension strut replacement due to surface corrosion or wear of the original items. Worn front wishbone bushes, corroded or perforated AC condensers, corroded inner faces on brake discs, rust around the windscreen aperture, oil leaks, track rod end wear leading to vibration, engine oil leaks (crank seal), power steering oil leaks, C4 diff faults etc. Critically exhaust heatshields and bumper support tubes require replacement due to corrosion.
The team see a number of Porsche 993s & 964s for servicing with corrosion around the bottom and the two bottom corners of the front windscreen. This is worth checking if you own a 993 or are looking to buy a 993/964. The windscreen trim can allow moisture to sit in the recess and promote corrosion along the recess. If caught early, a minor repair can be completed by Braunton Engineering with the windscreen out, a clean up of the recess and rust proofing without having to paint the scuttle panel (the panel in front of the screen). If the corrosion has spread past the rubber trim (i.e. rust bubbles are visible) then a '993 scuttle panel refurb' is required. Briefly, this includes; screen out, removal of all relevant items, cutting the old panel out and welding in a new factory supplied panel. To complete major work the front wings need to be moved away from scuttle panel & rubber trim, and finally a visit to the spray booth for the perfect colour match and finish.
The Porsche 993 represents the ultimate evolution of the air cooled 911 sports car. Although the shape features rounded changes, the 993 still delivers everything that the best 911 delivered to the performance driver, but with a more refined manner. Driving the 993 is a treat; the six speed gear change, power delivery and the handling are sublime. The 993 still retains the key elements of the 911 that owners love but with the reworking of the rear suspension to feature alloy multi-arm components, the handling at the extreme is tamed. The 993 featured a further development of the 3.6 engine to incorporate hydraulic lifters so valve clearance at service is not required.
