Porsche 996 common faults: Engine rear main oil seal replacement (RMS) at Braunton Engineering, Devon. Porsche 996 engine - intermediate shaft bearing replacement at Braunton Engineering, Devon. 996 cabriolet roof replacement and roof mechanism repair. Porsche 996 engine rough running/ ignition coil failure. Exhaust flange joints fastener corrosion, exhaust clamps fasteners corrosion - Braunton extract the stumps of the corroded bolts/nuts and refits with stainless steel items.
Porsche 996 radiators & AC condenser replacement. The Porsche 996 features coolant radiators in the front bumper/spoiler. The two air conditioning condensers sit directly behind the two larger front radiators. Over time the air- scoops ingest road dirt & salt which sits on the radiators and in-between the radiators and condensers. This can lead to corrosion and perforation of either radiator or condenser causing overheating or loss of air conditioning. Braunton Engineering make a point to clean & inspect the radiators at service interval. Replacing the rads and consensers requires the front bumper to be taken off - which is a good time to address any other items that are in the area and may require attention.
996 Tiptronic gearbox with rusty cooling pipes - a common site on older cars.

Porsche 996 ignition coil pack replacement: The 996 requires one coil for each cylinder (6x). The coils suffer from heat-soak from the exhaust and engine - with time the coils expand and the insulation breaks down causing misfire/rough running. Braunton Engineering recommend fitting six new coil packs together with six new spark plugs in the first instance of misfire for long- term reliability..jpg)
The Porsche 996 flat-six water-cooled engine produces 300bhp in 3.4 2001 guise - out of the car it is easy to see it is a compact unit. Porsche 996: The 996 model 911 Porsche is a refined version of the 911, designed for everyday use, practical yet delivering the high level of performance offered by a top level sports car. The 911 had evolved over the years to the ultimate version the 993. The 996 was a new design and did not carry over any one significant component from the 993 design.

The Porsche 996 turbo represents excellent value at around £25k but there are maintenance requirements which cannot be avoided even on mint examples. The car in the above images is a low mileage 996 turbo but still shows signs of exhaust fastener corrosion and corrosion to the turbo heatshields and turbo wastegate control rods - not something to be ignored
.
Some older Porsche 996 are showing signs of rust to the fuel rails. If left for the rust to take a grip, this can lead to perforation, and ultimately a fuel leak. The Porsche 996 turbo requires additional maintenance each year over the NA models with key visual checks on specific areas such as the engine plumbing, air intake, coolant routing and exhaust and turbo installations.
